Employee Spotlight: Meet Katherine Hataway

At Beneva, we believe the beauty of our flowers is only matched by the people who help bring them to life. While stunning arrangements may be what you see, there’s a dedicated team behind the scenes making it all happen with early mornings, creative minds, and a whole lot of heart. Get to know a little more about the people behind the petals and what makes our Beneva family so special.

This month, we’re excited to shine the spotlight on one of the amazing individuals who keeps our shop running smoothly: Floral Designer Katherine Hataway.

What is your role at Beneva, and what is your favorite part of the job?

I am a floral designer and I have been at Beneva for 3 years. What I like and truly appreciate at Beneva is the camaraderie we have as a team. It is a safe, clean and drug-free environment and that in itself is priceless.

How did you get started in the floral industry?

My first real job was as a glassblower and I have always been creative. I knew I needed a backup plan and I answered an ad for a floral designer trainee; the rest is history. Now I have over 40 years of experience.

If you could design a bouquet to match your personality, what would be in it?

My favorite arrangement would be something contemporary with birds of paradise, orchids, ginger and other exotics.

What’s one thing about working in a flower shop that people might be surprised to learn?

It is much harder than people realize. You are on your feet all day, every day. During holiday times, the hours are brutal, the older you get.

What’s your favorite local spot to grab lunch or coffee on a break?

This is Florida, it’s hot! I break and lunch at my workstation and eat the food I brought from home.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

There are way too many destinations I would like to visit. I love cruises and my dream would to go on a cruise around the world and experience all the different cultures, architecture, landscapes, food & BEACHES!

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received (floral or otherwise)?

Always make plans to do things you enjoy as much as possible with the people you love to make life more interesting. Nothing is forever.
