It finally happened! My baby sister is getting married and I am 3,000 miles away!
What is a big sister supposed to do? Sure, I knew she’d fall in love someday, but when I look at her, I still see my 5 year old shadow that I “had” to babysit at the most inconvenient times and to this day I still call, “Bug”. As the older, wiser, already married sister I was more than thrilled when she asked me for advice. The conversation went something like this in text messages of course…
After tears of joy and the initial shock that I must be old because she’s old enough to get married wore off she said, “I need your advice… What do I do first?”
“Well…” I responded, “Do you have a date set?”
“Yes, it’s a little over 2 months from now.” she replied.
I admit I gulped. My engagement was 12 months long and that did not seem long enough. With the biggest smile in my voice that I could muster this quick witted sister said, “Let me ask Doris. She’s our wedding and special events planner and she’ll know what to do.”
Here’s What Doris Suggests:
In the first week of Bug’s engagement she will need to determine her budget, choose and ask her attendants and find a venue as well as a caterer. If she doesn’t know who to hire, tell her to ask her friends, look online to see if there is a wedding network in her area or even call her local florist. They have close relationships with many vendors and will be able to give her some suggestions. Once those things are done she’ll need to pick out her dress because they can take up to 3 months to arrive. She will need to know that she might have to pick something off the rack and have it altered. Don’t forget to tell her to make an appointment at the bridal shop to ensure they have someone who can help her find the right one.
