In 1935, the United States Congress voted to establish National Friendship Day on the first Sunday of August. Since that time, many countries have decided to join the movement , which is now unofficially a global observance. The origin of National Sisters Day, which is celebrated on the same day, is less clear – but we find it quite fitting that the two occasions coincide. After all, many sisters are lifelong best friends, and our best friends are often like family. No matter what day of the year, Beneva Flowers helps our friends and neighbors in Sarasota to honor the most cherished people in our lives, and August 6th gives us the platform to do so in a meaningful way.
Why It’s Great to Have a Sister: Studies have shown that people who grow up with sisters are usually much happier, more well adjusted adults. They also tend to exhibit more optimistic tendencies, and are often more charitable as a whole – perhaps because of all the sharing that was required when they were young!
Ah, summertime – in Sarasota, that guarantees critters and insects in your yard. Some, like bees and butterflies, enhance the floral atmosphere, while others are a bit peskier. Beneva Flowers has everything you need to either create a beautiful butterfly garden or attract bees with bee-friendly plants – or even to keep aggressive bugs at bay with plants that repel insects. We probably don’t need any reason or excuse to celebrate beautiful roses, but this month gives us that opportunity. June is National Rose Month, and is your chance to send a gorgeous bouquet of these classic beauties to those you love. Although a go-to flower for weddings, anniversaries, birthdays and more, you can give roses any day of the year, all year long. At this time of year, we love the bright, vivid vibrancy of summer roses, and you can get them from Beneva Flowers.
Did You Know? Roses grow in every color except true-blue and black. They actually lack a gene necessary to create that color in their petals. Roses billed as “black roses” are actually a deep, dark red color. Continue reading

St. Patrick’s Day is the most Irish holiday of the year, yet it was founded in honor of a man from Britain. The first parade actually took place in Boston, not in Ireland, and it is celebrated by far more Americans than Irish citizens. Overall, this is a holiday with interesting origins and even more curious traditions. But if you love dressing up in the customary green, we suggest also dressing up your Sarasota home with St. Patrick’s Day decor – with these beautiful floral designs that will attract all the luck o’ the Irish!
Can You Spell That? Before he became a Catholic priest and missionary, Patrick’s name was Maewyn Succat – and he was born in Great Britain.
Patrick came to Ireland in quite a dramatic way. Kidnapped by pirates as a teenager, he was held captive in Ireland. After his release, he spent time in seminary; then returned to the predominantly pagan nation to preach the faith he had acquired while in captivity. Although a famous legend claims he saved Ireland by driving out all the snakes – and he is often depicted as doing such – historians say that never happened. The legend likely arose from the fact that the pagan druid people of Ireland used snake images in their practices, and this people group was the target of Patrick’s evangelism.
In the 1700s, the largest influx of Irish immigrants into the United States settled in the Boston area. It was in this town that St. Patrick’s Day was first celebrated in North America in 1737, the first official parade is questionable. Although history records the first parade was in New York City in 1766, many claim it happened in Boston a decade earlier. As of a few years ago, it was estimated that 36 million Americans claim Irish descent, meaning our parties include more folks than in Ireland – where the entire population numbers less than 5 million people.
Here in Sarasota, celebrate by drinking green beer, eating corned beef and cabbage, and wearing green. But if you want to commemorate the day sending a greeting to your Irish friends or family, send a big “Cead Mile Failte!” to them with a gorgeous Irish-inspired green and white bouquet from Beneva Flowers! St. Patrick’s Day decor was never so beautiful!
Although in Sarasota we don’t have the change of seasons like in other parts of the country, spring does bring about a fresh attitude and a new crop of beautiful flowers. Snapdragons, spray roses, stargazer lilies, hydrangea, gerbera daisies, mums – a wide variety of vivid spring blooms provide spring ambiance and vibrant color for the new season. Beneva Flowers has all of the flowers you need for every occasion, even if your reason is simply “just because it is spring!”
Did You Know? In other parts of the country. one of the very first signs that spring is imminent is the appearance of the crocus. This tenacious flower often pushes up through the snow, not willing to wait any longer to bloom. Once the crocus appears, the thaw is on its way.
International Women’s Day is a worldwide observance of the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women everywhere. Recognized since in the early 1900’s, the initiative believes that no single institution, corporation, charity, or government is solely responsible for the movement. Instead, they believe that all like-minded people should stand shoulder-to-shoulder to fight for justice and equality for women, no matter where they live. International Women’s Day inspires unity, promotes reflection, supports advocacy and encourages action.
A Worldwide Social Gathering: On March 8, men and women alike will be involved events that take place both locally and globally. The organizers of the celebration urge everyone to tell the world about their support by tagging social media posts with #BeBoldforChange. Continue reading
