Homecoming weekend is a special time of remembrance and new memories, of old friends and time-honored rivalries. From the football game to the homecoming court, from the pep rallies to the last romantic dance, flowers play an important role, and the team at Beneva Flowers is ready to make your weekend one to remember!
Why Homecoming? The first homecoming weekend is believed to have been at the University of Missouri in 1910. Facing their rivals in a big game, the athletic department wanted to fill the stands, and so invited alumni to “come home” for the game. Over 10,000 responded, and homecoming tradition was born.
National Puppy Day was instituted 10 years ago by animal rights advocates looking to shine a spotlight on several issues – overpopulation, puppy mills, and the plight of shelter animals. The main emphasis of the day is to both celebrate the joy that a new puppy brings to our lives; as well as to encourage people to adopt rescue or shelter dogs when looking for new furry friends. At Beneva Flowers, we have whimsical floral designs perfect to acknowledge the dog lover in your life or to thank the Sarasota shelter volunteer who tirelessly works on behalf of the animals. Order one of our adorable designs, or give us a call to create a custom arrangement for a very special puppy. Continue reading

When creating floral bouquets for birthdays, there are several places that designers may derive their inspiration. Each month has two symbols which represent it – a flower, and a birthstone. The birth flower of January is the carnation, and the birthstone of January is the garnet, a deep red gemstone. Therefore both of these elements are a wonderful place to start when designing birthday gifts for those you love. Our birthstone collection incorporates the colors of the gem into designs specifically made for each month. Continue reading
Beneva Flowers was named Best Florist by readers of SRQ Magazine in its annual “Best of SRQ Local” contest. This is the first year that SRQ Magazine has honored a florist in its annual online competition, and Beneva Flowers is proud to be the first florist to win this special award.
Customer Amariah Dawes explained why she voted for Beneva Flowers in the “Best of SRQ Local” contest:
“The first time I ordered from them, I was totally stressed out and had no idea what I wanted but I needed something quick,” Dawes said. “They took my order with great patience and understanding to make sure I got exactly that I was envisioning.”

Two strong tornados touched down in Sarasota and Manatee counties early Sunday morning, killing two people and causing millions of dollars’ worth of property damage in the area.
At 3:17 a.m., a 350-yard-wide tornado tore across Siesta Key and reached wind speeds of up to 132 mph over its mile-long path. The tornado heavily damaged condos and homes on Siesta Key and the nearby mainland.
Almost 20 minutes later, a second tornado touched down near the town of Duette in Manatee Country. That tornado measured 300 yards wide with wind speeds of 127 mph along its 9.5-mile path. It claimed the lives of two people and injured five others.
According to The National Weather Service, both tornadoes rated at EF2 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale of 0 to 5. An EF2 tornado is rated as strong, with winds of 111 to 135 mph.
Over 60 properties in Sarasota County suffered structural damage with an estimated total of over $12 million. Immediately following the storms, nearly 17,000 Florida Power & Light customers were without electricity, but the power had nearly all been restored by later Sunday morning.
Florida Gov. Rick Scott toured the area on Sunday afternoon to assess the damage. It has not yet been determined if the state would seek a federal state of disaster declaration.

This Mother’s Day weekend is extra special for Faith Gross of Sarasota. She was enjoying spending time with her granddaughter on Saturday when she received a phone call letting her know that she had just been named the winner of the 2015 Sarasota’s Favorite Mom Contest. Faith didn’t even know that her daughter, Jennifer, had entered her in the contest, so it was a wonderful surprise to start the weekend.
Jennifer is one of Faith’s five children, which is remarkable considering the fact that Faith was told at a young age that she would never be able to have any children. But Faith has a pretty good track record of overcoming tremendous odds.
In 2014, Faith was diagnosed with cancer. Her faith, love, compassion, spirit and strength drove her to fight it head-on. No matter how sick the chemo treatments made her, the disease was no match for her unwavering sense of humor and her beaming smile.
Faith’s children and grandchildren are proud of the way she fought cancer, but more importantly they are proud of the role model she has been and the guidance she has always provided.
Beneva Flowers is honored to award the title of Sarasota’s Favorite Mom to such a remarkable woman, and present her with a special bouquet of flowers and a one-of-a-kind pendant from Milan’s Jewelry. Faith also received a gift card from Mattison’s, and will appear in an upcoming issue of SRQ Magazine.
What do flowers have in common with baseball? For Beneva Flowers and the Baltimore Orioles, the answer is obvious. When the Orioles moved their Spring Training headquarters to Sarasota, Florida in 2010, a unique opportunity was born. For a team nicknamed “the Birds” heading to the white beaches and warm weather of sunny Florida, there couldn’t be a more aptly named flower than the Bird of Paradise.
Each year on opening day of Spring Training, we proudly welcome “the Birds” back to paradise by giving away the peculiar-looking tropical flowers to the first 1000 female fans through the gate. Our relationship with the Orioles doesn’t end there, however. At each home game during Spring Training, we present one lucky fan with a special Birds of Paradise tropical bouquet. We also hold contests throughout the month and award Orioles game tickets to winners.
The annual Spring Training season is brief, lasting only about a month, but is immensely popular in Florida. Since moving to Sarasota five years ago, the Orioles have drawn over half a million visitors to the area, and play in front of over 7400 fans at each home game.
That kind of exposure is great, but more importantly it gives us a chance to actively participate in an important community event. Community involvement has always been an important part of business at Beneva Flowers. Whether it’s our relationship with the Orioles or our Helping Hands program to benefit our local schools, churches and non-profit organizations, we are proud to support our friends and neighbors who love this community as much as we do.
The votes are in, and for the 17th consecutive year, Beneva Flowers was named Sarasota’s #1 florist by the Sarasota Herald-Tribune.
